High above the Franconian wine village of Volkach stands Maria im Weingarten. A late medieval pilgrimage church it sits nestled amongst the vineyards. This isn’t just any church. Maria im Weingarten holds a captivating history. It was once the oldest parish in the region. Centuries of wars and destruction threatened its existence. Then came the incredible Madonna theft of the 1960s.

Imagine the scene. A moonless night in August 1962. Thieves stealthily enter Maria im Weingarten. They steal Tilman Riemenschneider’s Madonna im Rosenkranz. This magnificent carving of the Madonna of the Rosary was a treasured masterpiece. It dates back to the 1500s. The thieves also took other precious artifacts. They damaged the Madonna during the robbery.

News of the theft spread like wildfire. Henri Nannen publisher of the German newspaper Stern stepped in. He offered a ransom. He promised not to involve the police. His decision sparked controversy. Some questioned his ethics. Others praised his bold move. The thieves eventually returned the carving. All the stolen artifacts were recovered. The thieves were eventually caught.

The Madonna’s recovery was a triumph for Maria im Weingarten. The carving was restored to its former glory. It is again a centerpiece of the church. The story of its theft became legendary. It cemented Maria im Weingarten’s place in history. It attracted many visitors.

The church itself is a testament to resilience. Its late Gothic architecture stands tall. The high-pitched gable roof of the nave contrasts with the lower hipped roof of the choir. A baroque spire from 1750 sits atop the choir’s roof. The interior features other works of art. A 1370 Pietà is a focal point. The church also displays several epitaphs and tombstones. These honor prominent citizens of Volkach and the Zollners of the nearby Hallburg. An alabaster Gnadenstuhl representing the Holy Trinity sits on one of the side altars. It is from the 17th century.

Maria im Weingarten is more than a church. It is a symbol of faith. It is a testament to the power of art. It is a place of peace and tranquility. It is a place where history and faith intertwine. As you stand before Maria im Weingarten you become part of its story. You become a witness to its enduring legacy.
