Could a church’s spirit linger even after its final hymn has faded? That’s the question that hangs in the air here at the former site of Saint Ann’s Church. Saint Ann’s Church opened its doors in 1903, a beacon of faith for the waves of European immigrants who called Pilsen home. For over a century, Saint Ann’s was more than just a place of worship. It was a cornerstone of the community, a witness to countless baptisms, weddings, and funerals. Generations of children attended St. Ann’s school, their laughter echoing through the halls. But by 2016, the Archdiocese decided to merge St. Ann’s with another parish due to shifting demographics and dwindling congregations. The final mass, held in 2018, was a bittersweet symphony of emotions. Tears flowed freely as parishioners, some who had attended St. Ann’s their entire lives, said goodbye. The building was sold, transformed into apartments, but the spirit of Saint Ann’s Church, its legacy of faith and community, continues to resonate, woven into the very fabric of Pilsen.
