“Butterflies flutter like scattered jewels here.” This is Fóti-Somlyó Természetvédelmi Terület. It’s a protected area that offers a unique glimpse into Hungary’s natural beauty.

Fóti-Somlyó Természetvédelmi Terület is not just any hill. It creates a real mountain appearance on the edge of the Gödöllő hills. Fót is a tourist destination.

In 1953, a part of Somlyó became protected. This was due to the incredible diversity of butterflies. Later, the protected area was expanded. Today, the Fóti-Somlyó Természetvédelmi Terület covers over 200 hectares. This area is home to hundreds of butterfly species. The most famous is the Fóti boglárka butterfly. It was first discovered here in 1944.

Imagine walking along the nature trail. The trail is about 3500 meters long. It starts near the Fáy Press House. The path is easy to follow. Just look for the blue butterfly signs. These signs mark the Fóti boglárka butterfly. A leisurely walk takes about 2.5 hours.

Keep an eye out for other wildlife. All of Hungary’s lizard species live here. You might even see a woodpecker. Their presence is revealed by the holes in the trees. Small colonies of bee-eaters nest in the hillside. This is a former sand mine wall. The elusive forest dormouse also calls this place home.

In 1988, the area was expanded to 217 hectares. Of this, 105 hectares were designated as highly protected. This ensured the preservation of the area’s unique biodiversity.

The area boasts an impressive 320 plant species. Many are sub-Mediterranean species. They remind us of the warmer periods after the Ice Age. Jozsef Szalkay found 650 butterfly species here.

As you walk, you’ll reach a panoramic viewpoint. From here, you can see from Szentendre to Százhalombatta. The Buda Hills and the Pilis Mountains are also visible. Below lies Fót. Its most famous building is Ybl Miklós’s four-tower church. You can also spot the Károlyi Castle and the sports hall.

Fóti-Somlyó Természetvédelmi Terület has a history beyond nature. During World War II, Russian units camped here. Some say remnants of their trenches and tank positions can still be seen.

Along the way, admire the acacia and black pine trees. The largest downy oak on Somlyó is over 200 years old. It is said that Mihály Vörösmarty saw this tree. He often visited the Fáy Press House at the foot of the hill.
