How many times a day do you think about cleanliness? For those who practice Islam, it’s a question that arises multiple times a day. Right now, we’re standing in front of the Markham Islamic Center, also known as Masjid Darul Iman. This Islamic Center is more than just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub for the Muslim community in Markham, catering to their religious, educational, social, and recreational needs. But there’s something particularly essential about this center, something that lies at the heart of Islamic practice: the Wudu facilities.

Wudu, or ablution, is a ritual purification process that Muslims undertake before prayer. It involves washing the hands, face, arms, and feet with water. Imagine, five times a day, members of this community come to the Markham Islamic Center and perform this ritual. As the community grew, the Islamic Center realized their Wudu facilities were no longer sufficient. They needed renovation to accommodate the ever-increasing number of worshippers, particularly for the women of the community. Through generous donations and community support, the Markham Islamic Center successfully renovated their men’s Wudu area. This renovation was a testament to their dedication and commitment to providing a clean and welcoming space for everyone. Currently, they are undertaking a similar project for the women’s Wudu area, driven by the belief that facilitating women in the mosque is a top priority.
