Fifteen acres of reclaimed land. That’s Jack Block Park. This vibrant green space in West Seattle wasn’t always a haven for recreation. Before the playful laughter of children and the calming sounds of the waves could be heard here a different story unfolded.

Imagine the pungent smell of creosote. For almost a century this land hosted a wood treatment plant. The J M Coleman Company started it in 1909. The plant changed hands several times. Finally it closed in 1994. Years of treating wood left behind a legacy. The soil was heavily contaminated. The area became a Superfund site. A designation that highlights the extent of environmental damage.

But the story doesn’t end there. Jack Block Park is a testament to human resilience. The Port of Seattle took on a massive cleanup. The removal of contaminated mud and pilings. They capped 58 acres of sediment. This remarkable feat transformed a polluted industrial site. It transformed it into a beautiful waterfront park.

Opened in 1998 as Terminal 5 Park it was renamed in 2001. The park was dedicated to Jack Block. A former Port Commissioner. His dedication to the city is reflected in this park. The 45-foot observation tower stands as a symbol of this transformation. It offers breathtaking views of Elliott Bay downtown Seattle and Mt Rainier. You can see the bustling activity of Terminal 5 and Vigor Shipyards from here.

The park’s beach opened in 2011. It’s a popular spot for families and nature lovers. A testament to the community’s commitment to environmental restoration. Today Jack Block Park is a cherished green space. It’s a symbol of hope and renewal. It’s a place where the past is remembered. It’s a place where the future is celebrated. So take a moment to appreciate this remarkable transformation.
