Here in Golden Gate Park lies a place of solace. It is a place of remembrance. This is the Circle of Friends.

The Circle of Friends is part of the National AIDS Memorial Grove. It is a living tribute to those affected by AIDS. The grove offers a space for healing and hope. It ensures that those who suffered are never forgotten.

The idea for the National AIDS Memorial Grove began in 1988. A group of San Francisco residents wanted a place to express grief. The AIDS epidemic had devastated their community. They envisioned a serene space for memorial services. People could remember loved ones among the redwoods.

The chosen site was the de Laveaga Dell. It was then overgrown and unusable. Architects volunteered their services. They created a landscape plan. Renovation began in September 1991. Thousands of volunteers donated time to clear and plant.

In 1996 Congress designated the grove as a National Memorial. This proclaimed a dedicated space for those touched by AIDS. The Circle of Friends is a key part of this memorial. It is a circular stone plaza. Names of those touched by AIDS are inscribed here.

Visitors often leave informal remembrances. They honor loved ones. The Circle of Friends is located near the eastern entry of the grove. A paved path makes it wheelchair accessible. This path leads to the Circle of Friends.

The grove has seventeen defined areas. Volunteers and a city gardener maintain these areas. The design focuses on individuals and small groups. Larger groups can use it for commitment ceremonies. Memorial services, picnics, and weddings are also held here.

The National AIDS Memorial Grove sits in Golden Gate Park’s eastern end. It is at the intersection of Bowling Green and Middle Drive East. It is across from the tennis courts.

The Circle of Friends is more than stone. It represents community. It embodies remembrance. It offers a place for reflection. The grove uses landscape to make this point.

As you walk the path consider the power of collective memory. Consider individual stories. Think about the ongoing need for compassion. The Circle of Friends stands as a testament. It shows love and remembrance.

The AIDS Quilt now exists alongside the Grove. The Quilt and the Grove are successful memorials. They need work and care. This sustained care is one method of negotiating memory. The Circle of Friends embodies remembrance. It gives an important message of love.
