Ever stopped to think about how ships are designed? The Ship Model Towing Tank here at Shanghai Jiao Tong University holds some answers. This isn’t just any tank. It’s a place where the future of naval engineering is tested.
Approved by the Ministry of Education in 2012, the Multi-function Towing Tank project represents a significant investment. About 98 million RMB went into creating this advanced facility. This demonstrates China’s commitment to maritime research.
The Ship Model Towing Tank occupies a large area. It spans 12223 square meters. The tank itself measures 300 meters long. It is 16 meters wide and 7.5 meters deep. There’s even a dock measuring 12 meters by 2.5 meters by 2.1 meters.
Inside, you will find advanced equipment. This includes carriages and a wave maker. Sophisticated measuring instruments are in place. The main carriage can reach a top speed of 10 meters per second. This speed is world-class.
What kind of tests happen here? The Ship Model Towing Tank can conduct various tests. These include resistance tests and self-propulsion tests. It forecasts sailing performance including underwater navigation. They even examine wing-in-ground effects. Ocean energy tests are also performed here.
The research here is broad. It includes applied mathematics and fluid mechanics. Fluid-structure interaction and eddy current studies happen here. Scientists work on optimization and new energy systems.
This facility boasts other impressive equipment. There are propeller dynamometers and laser velocimeters. Cavitation observation and noise measurement systems are used. A large hydrophone acoustic array is also available.
Consider the decompression towing tank laboratory. It is unique in China. It can simulate both the Froude number and cavitation number at the same time. Advanced particle imaging velocimetry or PIV systems are used. This allows research into hydrodynamic performance.
Another towing tank on the Xuhui Campus should also be mentioned. Built in 1958, it was the earliest dual-rail ship towing tank in new China. That tank is smaller, measuring 110 meters long. It is 6 meters wide and 3 meters deep. Its towing speed reaches 6 meters per second.
The Ship Model Towing Tank plays an important role. It supports cutting-edge scientific research. It offers industrial support services. It ensures ships are safer, more efficient and ready for the challenges of the sea. This tank represents China’s dedication to naval innovation.
