“Did you hear that? Sounds like a monkey!” You might be surprised to hear that in Fes, but indeed, one of Morocco’s most iconic animals is the Barbary macaque. You can find them at the Small animals zoo. These fascinating creatures are the only wild monkeys found north of the Sahara Desert. The Barbary macaque is easily recognizable by its thick, silky fur which ranges in color from yellowish-brown to gray. And of course, who could forget their distinctive pink faces, free of any fur?
Sadly, these remarkable primates are facing a tough battle for survival. Deforestation, illegal pet trade, and habitat loss threaten their existence. The Barbary macaque is now considered an endangered species. Organizations are working hard to protect them. Let’s hope their efforts are successful in ensuring these incredible creatures remain part of Morocco’s rich biodiversity.
