East Village emulates the classical Victorian architecture of areas like Maida Vale. The design includes communal squares and courtyards. The apartments in East Village range from studios to five-bedroom units. Each apartment has generous floor spacing. Every unit includes a balcony. This provides enough space for a table and chairs.
During the 2012 Summer Olympics, the buildings served as “hotel” style apartments. These catered to the athletes. There were 3300 apartments. Each had a TV, internet access, and a private courtyard. The village provided approximately 17320 beds for athletes and officials. Temporary buildings were added. A large food hall operated 24 hours a day. It could cater to 5500 athletes at once. There was also an entertainment hall. It provided video games and a communal rest space. A non-alcoholic bar was available.
After the Olympics, East Village was adapted. It became a new residential quarter. The construction created 2818 new homes. This included 1379 affordable homes for sale and rent. The community includes gardens, parks, and communal areas. A school, health clinic, and shops serve the residents.
Today, East Village is a diverse neighborhood. More than 7000 people call it home. It has independent shops, cafes and bars. It is known for its excellent transport links. Stratford International station provides fast services to central London. The Docklands Light Railway offers access to east London.
East Village is also committed to sustainability. The residential accommodation was designed to achieve high standards for sustainable homes. The area includes green open spaces. These provide habitats for wildlife. Waste recycling programs are also in place.
