It dates back to at least the 13th century. Over the centuries it was owned by various prominent figures. One intriguing story involves Charles de Guise. He acquired the Château de Grande Romaine in 1559. He then traded it to the Bishop of Paris in exchange for the land of Chevreuse. Imagine having such influence! The château’s appearance changed significantly in 1796. The old wings were demolished, giving the courtyard its current rounded shape. The architect Visconti added the octagonal tower. The Château de Grande Romaine even served a purpose during World War I. It was used as both military housing and a hospital. In more recent times, in 1998, it played host to a world-famous guest. The Brazilian national football team stayed here during the World Cup. Perhaps the peaceful park and swimming pool helped them reach the final.
