What if walls could talk? At Richmond and Hillcroft Adult Community College, they whisper tales of transformation, resilience, and the power of lifelong learning. Richmond and Hillcroft Adult Community College isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the enduring human thirst for knowledge. Its roots trace back to a technical institute established in 1895. Back then, affordable secondary education was a distant dream for many in Barnes and Richmond. The institute, built on Kew Road, aimed to bridge that gap. It offered a beacon of hope for those seeking to improve their lives through education. The building served a dual purpose, housing both the technical institute and a secondary school. The original structure stood proudly at the corner of Selwyn Avenue and Kew Road. It eventually became the sole domain of the technical institute when the secondary school merged with Sheen Grammar School in 1939. The institute’s journey wasn’t always smooth. During World War II, it was repurposed as an Air Raid Precautions and ambulance depot. But even amidst wartime chaos, the spirit of learning persisted. In 1947, it was revived as the Technical Institute and School of Art for Richmond and Barnes, marking a new chapter in its history. Richmond and Hillcroft Adult Community College has undergone several name changes. Each reflects its evolution and expanding mission. It transitioned from the Richmond Institute of Further Education in 1954 to Richmond Adult College in 1970. Finally, it settled into its current name after a merger with Hillcroft College in 2017. This merger brought together two institutions dedicated to adult education, creating a powerhouse of learning in the heart of Greater London. Today, Richmond and Hillcroft Adult Community College thrives on its Parkshot site, the former location of Richmond County School for Girls. It also boasts a campus in Surbiton, previously home to the women-only Hillcroft College. The college offers a diverse range of courses. From GCSEs and NVQs to Access courses and higher education programs in partnership with the University of Westminster, Richmond and Hillcroft Adult Community College truly caters to a diverse community. It stands as a reminder that education is not confined to youth but is a lifelong journey of discovery and empowerment.
