Did the stones of Grundfør Kirke whisper secrets to the wind? I wonder what tales they could tell. Grundfør Kirke stands before us, a testament to centuries of history. This Romanesque village church, dedicated to John the Baptist, has witnessed the passage of time since the 12th century. Its original structure, crafted from freestone and small granite ashlar blocks, speaks of a simpler era. Look closely at the corners, marked by lesenes. These architectural details add a touch of elegance to the sturdy stonework. Grundfør Kirke also possesses remnants of its Romanesque past, like the bricked-in north and south doorways and the traces of Romanesque windows on the north and east sides. Imagine the stories these windows have seen unfold. Inside, the ship of the church boasts a flat beamed ceiling. The choir, however, reveals a later addition: a cross vault installed during the late Gothic period. The chancel arch, a beautiful architectural element, remains intact with its narrow corbels. The late Baroque altarpiece, dating from 1725, still holds its original paintings. The pulpit, a work of art from 1636, is thought to be crafted by the same workshop that created the pulpit in Lyngå Kirke. Look up at the upper gallery. Notice the carved apostle figures from around 1630. These intricate details add a layer of artistry to the church. Beneath the choir lies a hidden story. An inscription on the chancel steps mentions the burial of the parish priest, Villads Olufsen. More recently, a surprising discovery was made when the floor beneath the altar collapsed, revealing the burial site of the priest and his family. The Romanesque granite font with its double lions on the basin also adds to the church’s rich history. Grundfør Kirke is more than just stones and mortar. It is a living testament to the passage of time and the stories of the people who have worshipped within its walls.
