From a smoldering disaster, a vibrant square emerged. Kultorvet, meaning “The Coal Market,” arose from the ashes of the devastating Copenhagen Fire of 1728. Kultorvet wasn’t always the bustling hub you see today. It started as a smaller marketplace known as “New North Market above the Round Tower”. Imagine the scene: colliers, peat gatherers, and farmers from North Zealand converging on this spot, their carts laden with charcoal, firewood, and peat. This trade, once conducted near the Northern City Gate, found a new home in the heart of the rebuilt city. Kultorvet gradually expanded over time. Demolitions and new constructions shaped its boundaries, leaving behind a mix of architectural styles. Look around you. The building at number 14, on the corner with Sankt Gertruds Stræde, whispers tales of the post-fire reconstruction. The structures at numbers 5, 7, 9-11, and 15, designed by Christian Frederik Hansen, stand as elegant reminders of the 1810s. And then there’s the former Kultorvet Pharmacy at number 17, a historicist gem from 1895, once crowned by a grand spire that sadly met an early demise. Kultorvet is more than just buildings. It’s a living, breathing space. The 2013 renovation gifted the square with a circular water feature, a centerpiece that transforms into a bandstand for special events. Seek out one of Copenhagen’s old telephone kiosks, a charming relic of a bygone era. Pause by Hanne Varming’s bronze statue, “The Elder Mother,” and contemplate the quiet wisdom of the elderly couple immortalized in bronze. Kultorvet connects Nørreport station to Amagertorv on Strøget, a pedestrian-friendly pathway pulsing with life. Cafés beckon with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Shops tempt with their colorful displays. During the summer, Kultorvet transforms into an open-air concert venue, its air filled with music and laughter. From a market born of necessity to a vibrant square embracing modernity, Kultorvet embodies the resilient spirit of Copenhagen.
