Amidst the urban sprawl of Mexico City, the Escuela Superior de Ingeniería y Arquitectura ESIA Zacatenco stands as a testament to a century of architectural and engineering prowess. The ESIA Zacatenco isn’t just a building; it’s a living archive of Mexican innovation. Established in 1922 as the Escuela Técnica de Constructores, its initial focus was on training builders, electricians, and various other construction specialists. Imagine those early students, honing their skills in a city still rebuilding itself after the Mexican Revolution. The ESIA Zacatenco, then located on Tres Guerras street, played a crucial role in this reconstruction, contributing to the building of educational spaces across the city. The school evolved alongside Mexico’s ambitions. In 1931, thanks to the efforts of architects like Juan O’Gorman and support from Narciso Bassols, the Secretary of Public Education, the institution was elevated to a higher education level, becoming the Escuela Superior de Construcción. This marked a turning point, solidifying its role in shaping Mexico’s future engineers and architects. Just a few years later, in 1936, the school became a founding member of the prestigious Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), a testament to its growing importance in Mexico’s academic landscape. The ESIA Zacatenco didn’t remain static. In 1937, it was renamed the Escuela Superior de Ingeniería y Arquitectura and relocated to Casco de Santo Tomas. It further expanded its offerings to encompass a wide array of engineering disciplines, demonstrating its commitment to adapting to the evolving needs of the nation. By 1945, it offered twelve different programs, ranging from architecture and civil engineering to geology and mining. This expansion eventually led to the creation of the Escuela Superior de Ingeniería Química e Industrias Extractivas (ESIQIE). Finally, in 1959, the ESIA Zacatenco found its current home at the Unidad Profesional de Zacatenco, occupying buildings 4 and 5 initially, and later, buildings 10, 11, and 12. The ESIA now comprises three units: Zacatenco, Tecamachalco, and Ticomán, each focusing on different areas of expertise within engineering and architecture. The ESIA Zacatenco carries its rich history within its walls. Its graduates have played pivotal roles in shaping Mexico’s infrastructure and urban landscape, putting, as the IPN motto states, “La Técnica al Servicio de la Patria,” or “Technology at the Service of the Nation.”
