Established in 1976, Northridge Preparatory School stands as a testament to the vision of a group of parents. These parents desired a unique learning environment for their sons. Northridge Prep, as it’s often called, isn’t just about academics. It’s about shaping young men into well-rounded individuals. The school’s motto, “Juvenes vestri visiones videbunt” (“Your young men shall see visions”), reflects this commitment. Located in Niles, Illinois, Northridge Preparatory School initially opened its doors with a small cohort of 33 boys and 8 faculty members. They rented space from the Park View School in Mount Prospect. The school’s first headmaster, Dr. James Stenson, laid the foundation for its focus on academics and character development. Northridge Prep is an independent Catholic school, guided by the teachings of the Catholic Church. Interestingly, it’s not financially tied to the Archdiocese of Chicago like diocesan schools. This independence allowed it to avoid the Chicago Catholic Schools Placement exam. Despite this independence, Northridge Prep received the Catholic Honor Roll award in 2008. This distinguished it as a “Top 50 Catholic High School in America”. The school emphasizes a strong curriculum and a robust athletics program. Sports like soccer, tennis, cross country, track, and baseball are all part of the Northridge experience. The school’s athletic director and head varsity basketball coach is Will Rey, the former Head Basketball Coach at Loyola University. Within Northridge Preparatory School, a unique “Halls System” divides students into four halls: Cavalier, Riddervon, Paladin, and Vytis. This system fosters a sense of community and encourages leadership. The school also maintains a close relationship with The Willows Academy. This is a girls’ college preparatory school in Des Plaines, Illinois. Parents from both schools often organize dances and social events, fostering connections between the two student bodies. Northridge Prep’s journey includes a significant move. In 1997, the school purchased the Ballard School, finally establishing a permanent home. Later, a chapel and gymnasium were added. These additions enhanced the school’s spiritual and physical environment. Northridge Prep has continuously evolved, expanding its academic, athletic, and extracurricular activities. The school continues to thrive under the leadership of dedicated faculty and headmasters.
