A haven of peace amidst Jakarta’s vibrant chaos. That’s Masjid Jami’ Azzawiyah. This isn’t just any mosque. It’s a living testament to faith. It’s a story etched in stone and whispered on the wind.

Masjid Jami’ Azzawiyah in Pekojan Jakarta Barat stands as one of Jakarta’s oldest mosques. Its history stretches back to 1812. It was founded by Habib Ahmad bin Hamzah Alatas. A revered scholar from Tarim Hadramaut Yemen. He introduced the Fathul Mu’in a significant religious text still used in traditional Islamic schools.

Habib Ahmad wasn’t just a scholar. He was a visionary. He saw the mosque not just as a place of worship. He envisioned it as a center of Islamic education. That vision continues today. The mosque is managed by the Yayasan Wakaf Al-Habib Ahmad Bin Hamzah Alatas.

Initially a small prayer hall it grew into the majestic mosque we see today. The area of Pekojan was known as an Arab village. It’s interesting to note that though predominantly inhabited by Arab Muslims it began with Indian Muslim settlers. The area boasts four grand mosques and 26 smaller prayer halls. Some date back to the colonial era.

The mosque buzzes with activity especially during and after the three days of Eid al-Fitr. Arab descendants flock here. Across the street sits an old Moorish-style house. The Saleh Aljufri family one of Pekojan’s enduring Arab families lives there. Their lives are interwoven with the mosque’s long history.

Masjid Jami’ Azzawiyah isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a living narrative. It’s a story of faith perseverance and community. It’s a story you can feel in the very stones beneath your feet. It’s a place where history whispers and faith sings. A place you won’t soon forget.
