Does the name Friedrich Ebert ring a bell? Here, before the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, we delve into the legacy of Germany’s first president. It stands as a testament to his vision. This foundation continues to champion democracy, political education, and support for bright students.

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung or FES was established in 1925. It emerged from Friedrich Ebert’s own wish. He requested that donations from his funeral go to creating a foundation. Konrad Ludwig, then SPD chairman, took on building it shortly after Ebert’s death.

Initially, the FES aimed to fight discrimination against workers in education. It provided aid to young proletarians. This enabled them to study at state-accredited institutions. By 1931, the FES had funded 295 students. The Great Depression caused funding to dry up at this time.

The Nazis banned the FES in 1933 along with the Social Democratic Party. However, the FES was revived in 1946. It happened at the founding assembly of the Socialist German Student Federation. By 1954, the FES was restructured. It became a charitable organization dedicated to democratic education. It became an independent institute.

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Academic Foundation aids young talents. It is one of thirteen state-funded organizations in Germany for this purpose. Less than 1% of German students receive such scholarships.

Since the 1960s, the FES has been active in development aid. It has supported democracy and freedom movements. The FES played a vital role in overcoming dictatorships. The Socialist Party of Portugal was formed at an FES school in Germany.

Today, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung operates globally. It has offices in Bonn and Berlin and agencies in over 100 countries. The FES is funded mainly through grants from the federal budget.

Until 2009, the FES had its own conference center in Bonn. This center was located on the Venusberg. The historical research center houses the Archive of Social Democracy. Its libraries are in Bonn and Trier. This archive holds a vast collection of documents. These relate to social history and the history of the workers’ movement.

Since 1982, the FES has awarded “Das politische Buch”. It is a prize promoting noteworthy political books. This prize commemorates the Nazi book burnings of 1933.

In 2017, the FES faced a cyber attack. In 2022, it was barred from working in Russia. In 2024, Russia declared it an “undesirable organization”.

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung champions social democracy. It promotes political education and civic engagement. It strives for equality and a fair distribution of wealth. The FES organizes seminars and provides scholarships. It supports policy initiatives. It promotes international cooperation.

From humble beginnings to a global presence, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung remains dedicated to its founding principles. The FES continues to shape a more democratic and just world.
