Did Ralph E. Dickman ever imagine a park named in his honor? Here at Dickman Park, in the heart of Minneapolis’ St. Anthony West neighborhood, his legacy lives on. Dickman Park isn’t just a green space. It’s a vibrant hub, a testament to community spirit and a place where memories are made. Dickman, a dedicated youth worker, attorney, and Hennepin County Commissioner, surely would have been proud. The park’s history stretches back to 1949. The initial land, a modest 1.23 acres, was purchased for a mere $8,500. It was a smaller space than initially hoped for. But its location, in an underserved neighborhood, made it a vital addition to the city’s green spaces. A unique land swap in 1954, involving Pioneer Engineering Works and land at Northeast Athletic Field, significantly expanded Dickman Park. This expansion was a win-win, demonstrating the city’s commitment to its green spaces. In 1955, the park truly began to take shape. Buildings were moved, the land was graded, and plans for athletic fields, courts, and a picnic area were put into action. The wading pool, a beloved summer attraction, was added in 1957. By the winter of 1958-1959, a warming house welcomed skaters, and a recreation shelter followed in 1962. Today, Dickman Park boasts a playground installed in 2014, a popular wading pool open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, a half basketball court, horseshoe pits, and a community garden. The park even hosts the Northeast Farmers Market on Saturdays during the warmer months. Future plans include an urban agriculture zone with community gardens, an orchard, and a community kitchen. Dickman Park offers something for everyone, from sports enthusiasts to garden lovers. Soak in the atmosphere. Imagine the generations who have strolled these paths, splashed in the pool, and gathered for community events. Dickman Park is more than just a park. It’s a living story, a vibrant piece of Minneapolis history, and a tribute to the man whose name it bears.
