Did Johannes Søbøtker ever imagine his elegant country house would become the Øregaard Museum? Søbøtker, a merchant involved in the sometimes grim realities of the triangular trade, built Øregaard between 1806 and 1808. He envisioned a neoclassical summer retreat, designed by the French architect Joseph-Jacques Ramée. The same architect who shaped other grand homes in the area, like Sophienholm and Hellerupgård. Øregaard, with its clean lines and white-washed walls, stood as a testament to Søbøtker’s wealth. The surrounding park, designed by Ramée, was a romantic landscape. Complete with an artificial lake and grotto, it offered a picturesque escape from Copenhagen’s bustling city life. However, economic hardship forced Søbøtker to sell Øregaard in 1821. He then journeyed to the Danish West Indies, leaving behind his grand estate. In 1917, Gentofte Municipality purchased Øregaard. They transformed it into the Øregaard Museum, opening its doors to the public in 1921. Today, Øregaard Museum houses a remarkable topographic art collection. Spanning from 1750 to 1930, the collection showcases images of Copenhagen and its northern surroundings. It’s a visual journey through time, capturing the city’s transformation over centuries. The museum also boasts the Hegel Collection, a significant contribution from Jacob Hegel, a prominent publisher and avid art collector. His widow bequeathed the collection to the municipality, further enriching Øregaard’s holdings. Øregaard Museum isn’t merely a repository of art; it is a vibrant cultural hub, hosting several special exhibitions each year. These exhibitions feature both established and lesser-known artists. Often highlighting those who faced challenges or were underappreciated during their time. The museum embraces its history, with exhibitions exploring the Danish West Indies and the building’s evolution. Even the surrounding park, now a public space thanks to the landscape architect Gudmund Nyeland Brandt, plays a role. In 2017, a new pavilion, the Spejlscenen (Mirror Stage), opened in the park, providing a venue for puppet shows, music, and art performances. Øregaard Museum has undergone extensive renovations over the years. Preserving its original charm while enhancing its functionality. The restoration has revitalized interior surfaces, including the original wall decorations. Improved climate control and lighting ensure the artwork is preserved for future generations. So, as you stand before the Øregaard Museum, remember the journey of this elegant country house. From a merchant’s summer dream to a vibrant art museum, Øregaard stands as a testament to the power of transformation and the enduring allure of art and history.
