In the heart of London, nestled on Werter Road, stands The Community Church. It’s a place brimming with a unique history, a history that speaks of community and resilience. The Community Church, originally known as Werter Road Baptist Church, has witnessed the ebb and flow of London life for generations. Initially, this church wasn’t even called The Community Church. Its roots trace back to a group of six families from the American Church in London. In 1982, these families felt a calling to establish a mission church in Surrey, naming it the American Community Church. The name evolved in 1988 to the International Community Church, embracing a more inclusive and diverse congregation. Over the years, The Community Church has navigated numerous challenges, including Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic, even having to move locations eight times. Through it all, The Community Church has persevered, adapting and evolving to meet the needs of its community. Led by Pastor John Basson and a dedicated team from various nations, including South Africa, Canada, and the UK, the church thrives on its diverse membership. People from a multitude of countries, including the UK, North America, South Africa, Brazil, Colombia, Ukraine, Mauritius, and Germany, call The Community Church their spiritual home. This diversity has shaped the church’s identity, fostering unity amidst differing Christian traditions. The Community Church embraces both traditional and contemporary expressions of faith. The church leadership, consisting of five Council members and four Trustees, emphasizes Christ-centered teachings, guided by the words of Jesus: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” The Community Church, a testament to its resilient spirit, continues to serve as a beacon of faith and community in London.
