Our Lady of Fatima Parish Church

Was the journey to establish Our Lady of Fatima Parish Church as smooth as a Sunday hymn? Not quite. Here at the corner of Lubiran and Magistrado Abad Santos Streets, stands Our Lady of Fatima Church, a testament to perseverance and faith. Its story begins not within these elegant walls, but in a humble makeshift chapel on Lakas Street in 1948. Capuchin Father Gil de Legaria, then parish priest of the Sacred Heart in Santa Mesa, celebrated the first mass, sowing the seeds of a vibrant Catholic community in what was then a sleepy village. A small lot was purchased, and a modest chapel, built with mixed materials, was blessed in 1950 under the patronage of Our Lady of the Mediatrix of All Graces. Our Lady of Fatima Parish Church’s true genesis began in 1958. The Catholic community, led by dedicated lay leaders, petitioned for an independent parish. Their prayers were answered in 1959 with the arrival of Rev. Fr. Arsenio R. Bautista. Various religious organizations blossomed, solidifying the community’s spiritual foundation. The Fatima Parish Organization, spearheaded by Mr. Roberto Ramos, became the driving force behind the next crucial step. The community’s growing fervor led to the purchase of a larger lot, right here, where Our Lady of Fatima Parish Church now stands. This land, acquired from Jose Gonzales, became the site of Architect Vicente J. Lanuza’s vision. The church building itself cost P250,000.00, a significant sum at the time, reflecting the community’s dedication. The first image enshrined within Our Lady of Fatima Parish Church was a replica of the one venerated in Fatima, Portugal, a gift from Congressman Rafael Aquino and his wife. Later, a life-size image donated by Architect Julio Matias graced the altar. Interestingly, the image now residing in the new altar is the original one donated by the Aquinos, a touching return to the church’s early days. Eight priests have shepherded Our Lady of Fatima Parish Church, each leaving their mark on its growth and development. From its humble beginnings on Lakas Street to the grand structure before you, Our Lady of Fatima Parish Church stands as a beacon of faith. It’s a testament to the unwavering dedication of its community, a place where whispers of prayer turned into a resounding chorus of faith.
