Queen of Heaven Cemetery quickly became a significant part of the community. It initially operated independently. Then in 1965, it merged operations with the neighboring Mount Carmel Cemetery. Over 202,000 souls rest here. This includes notable figures like U.S. Representative Frank Annunzio, comedian George Kirby, and several athletes like baseball player George Binks and hockey player Elmer Vasko. Even actor Mark Venturini, known for his roles in “Friday the 13th, Part 5” and “Return of the Living Dead,” found his final resting place here. Queen of Heaven Cemetery also holds a poignant space. The Shrine of the Holy Innocents. This section provides a peaceful memorial for the young victims of the tragic 1958 Our Lady of the Angels School Fire. The cemetery’s design reflects a deep respect for tradition and remembrance. The Queen of Heaven Mausoleum, a grand structure at the northeast corner, houses 30,000 crypts and 64 columbarium niches. A separate garden crypt complex offers an additional 25,729 crypts and 720 niches. The mausoleum’s interior is a captivating display of art and craftsmanship. Stained glass windows cast colorful light on marble and bronze statues. Intricate wood carvings add to the serene atmosphere.
