From its commanding position on Am Steinberg 14 Villa Wollner surveys Dresden. This isn’t just a house. It’s a living testament to Dresden’s layered history. Imagine its beginnings a humble dwelling in the 18th century. Then came Justus Friedrich Gutz who purchased it in 1861. He transformed the structure into a grand villa in 1875. He added other buildings including a greenhouse for growing pineapples. A water tower doubling as an observation point stood tall until its demolition in 1959.

But the story doesn’t stop there. In 1881 Julius Robert Spies acquired the entire estate. His son-in-law Robert Karl Paul Wollner inherited it. Wollner commissioned the renowned architect Wilhelm Kreis. Between 1906 and 1908 Kreis dramatically redesigned the villa. He blended elements of neo-baroque and neo-classicism. The result is Villa Wollner as we see it today a stunning summer residence.

Notice the ornate facade. The reliefs and festoons are exquisite. The interior is equally impressive with its stucco gold marble and fine woods. A grand staircase leads to the southern showcase facade. It features an altan supported by four pillars. The park-like grounds are equally impressive. Sculptures by Georg Wrba and vases by Rudolf Born adorn the landscape. A bridge spans the road connecting the villa to a further section of the gardens.

Villa Wollner has known many uses. After Wollner’s death it passed to the state. It served as a rehabilitation home then during the Nazi era housed various SS units. Later it became student housing for the Dresden University of Education. Today this grand villa houses the LIOHT Foundation and IFEB Institute. It serves as an interdisciplinary conference and education center.

So as you stand here before Villa Wollner remember its long and remarkable story.
