A weathered stone etched with a forgotten inscription. This is Brønshøj Skole. More than just bricks and mortar. This building holds centuries of stories.
Brønshøj Skole stands proudly in the heart of Brønshøj-Husum. It’s a cornerstone of the community. It’s been educating children from kindergarten to ninth grade for generations. More than that it’s a vibrant hub. It offers a diverse range of elective subjects. These include art history music theory theater and film studies.
Its history stretches back to 1721. King Frederick IV established the first school here. This was the Rytterskolen a rider school. It was part of the crown estate. This supplied personnel horses and provisions for the royal cavalry. The school was a sturdy brick building with a tiled roof. School was compulsory for all children from age five. Christian childhood education and reading were taught free of charge. Parents however had to pay for writing and arithmetic lessons.
In 1901 Brønshøj Gamle Skole was built. Brønshøj became part of Copenhagen Municipality. Previously the school belonged to the Brønshøj/Rødovre parish council. Students from Utterslev Skole a school closed in 1902 transferred to Brønshøj Skole. The Rytterskolen operated as a branch until 1922.
A new building Brønshøj Ny Skole opened on January 9 1924. Sadly during World War II the school had a dark chapter. On March 27 1945 the German occupation forces seized Brønshøj Skole. They used it to house German refugees. The school was finally vacated on December 11 1945. From May 6 to 23 1945 freedom fighters used Brønshøj Gamle Skole.
During renovations in 2011 a tragic mistake occurred. The school’s archives from 1990-2011 were supposed to be handed over to the City Archive. Instead they were mistakenly destroyed. A sad loss of valuable history.
Today Brønshøj Skole continues its legacy. It’s a place of learning growth and community. A testament to its enduring spirit. A place where countless lives have been shaped. It’s a vibrant testament to education and the passage of time. Brønshøj Skole is more than a school it is a living history.
