Perhaps you’ve never heard of the Young Communist League. The YCL Plaque commemorates a youth movement with a rich history. This London landmark marks the spot where young activists gathered. They dreamed of a better world.

The Young Communist League’s story began in 1921. Two radical youth organizations merged. They formed the YCL. The Young Workers League and the International Communist Schools Movement united. This happened at a conference in Birmingham.

The YCL became the youth wing of the Communist Party of Great Britain. It mirrored the adult party. The YCL saw itself as part of a global movement. They followed direction from the Young Communist International in Moscow.

In its early years, the YCL focused on sports. Sports became a tool to recruit and organize young people. They fought against imperialism and poverty. By 1932, YCL members dominated the British Workers Sports Federation.

During the Spanish Civil War, many YCL members volunteered. They joined the International Brigades. They defended the Spanish Republic against fascism. John Cornford and Charlie Hutchison were notable members. Cornford was a poet. Hutchison was the chair of the Fulham YCL branch.

In the 1960s, the YCL supported the Vietnamese people. They opposed the Vietnam War. The YCL donated blood and medical aid. They collected funds for bicycles. These were given to the Vietnamese.

The YCL also engaged in cultural activities. They had holiday camps and football teams. In 1966, they launched The Trend is Communism campaign. This campaign linked the YCL to wider cultural trends.

Members of the YCL were part of the London Recruits. These volunteers went to South Africa. They supported the African National Congress. They set off leaflet bombs. These promoted the ANC. They told workers the struggle continued.

In the 1980s, Mark Ashton led the YCL. He co-founded Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners. This group supported miners during the 1984-1985 strike. The story is told in the film Pride.

After the Communist Party of Great Britain dissolved, the YCL reorganized. It became the youth section of the Communist Party of Britain. The YCL continues to be active. It focuses on trade unionism and climate change.

Today, the YCL holds an annual summer camp in Edale. This commemorates the Kinder Scout trespass. The trespass fought for access to the countryside. The YCL provides political education. It allows young workers to socialize. They can enjoy the natural heritage.

The YCL Plaque reminds us of a century of activism. It highlights the dedication of young people. They sought social change. Their efforts have left a lasting impact. The YCL plaque stands as a testament to their commitment. It also represents their ongoing pursuit of a better future.
