“Outer Ring Walking Horse Pond Bridge” it is quite a mouthful. But have you ever considered what lies beneath it?
The 外环走马塘桥 is more than just a bridge. It carries the S20 Shanghai Outer Ring Expressway. This expressway is vital to Shanghai’s infrastructure.
The Shanghai Outer Ring Expressway is designated S20. It forms a ring around Shanghai’s inner districts. Think of it as a circular highway embracing the city.
Once, sections of this road had unique names. The eastern part was called Huandong Avenue No. 1. The western part was Huanxi Avenue No. 1. These names reflected their cardinal direction.
The S20 expressway makes two important crossings. It spans the Huangpu River at the Xupu Bridge in the south. It also uses the Outer Ring Tunnel in the north. These crossings are essential for traffic flow.
The Shanghai Ring Expressway, or G1503, is another ring road. It’s also known as the Shanghai Suburb Ring Expressway. This route stretches for an impressive 209.22 kilometers. It nearly encircles the entire municipality.
The G1503 forms the outermost ring. It joins the Inner Ring Road, Middle Ring Road, and S20 Outer Ring Expressway. These rings work together to manage Shanghai’s traffic.
A portion of the G1503 shares space with the S20. This concurrency occurs in northern Pudong New Area. It’s because of Shanghai’s unique coastline on the East China Sea.
The Shanghai Ring Expressway starts at an interchange. It meets the S20 Outer Ring Expressway and Yixian Elevated Road. This starting point is in Baoshan District.
The expressway then dips into the Outer Ring Tunnel. This tunnel runs concurrent with the S20 Outer Ring Expressway. Emerging from the tunnel, it rises as an elevated highway. It curves through Pudong New Area.
The G1503 intersects with several expressways. These include the G40 Shanghai–Xi’an Expressway and the S1 Yingbin Expressway. It also meets the S32 Shanghai–Jiaxing–Huzhou Expressway.
Westward, the G1503 passes through Fengxian and Songjiang Districts. It briefly enters Jiangsu province. Finally, it loops back into Shanghai’s Jiading District.
Much of the G1503 is a tolled road. Fees are collected from Pudong New Area to Baoshan District.
The Nanpu Bridge is also vital for Shanghai. It was the first bridge connecting central Shanghai with Pudong. It significantly boosted Pudong’s development.
Some consider the Huangpu River Shanghai’s mother river. For generations, a bridge linking Pudong and Puxi was a dream. The Nanpu Bridge realized this vision.
Construction of the Nanpu Bridge began in 1988. Deng Xiaoping himself inscribed the bridge’s name. It opened to traffic in 1991. It was then the world’s fourth-largest cable-stayed bridge.
So as you traverse the 外环走马塘桥, remember its significance. It is part of a larger network. The Shanghai Outer Ring Expressway facilitates movement. It connects districts and supports Shanghai’s growth.
