Ever wondered what rises from rubble? That’s the story of Chisenhale Art Place. This isn’t just one thing. It’s actually three creative initiatives under one roof. Chisenhale Art Place houses Chisenhale Studios. It also has Chisenhale Gallery and Chisenhale Dance Space. Each operates independently. However, they all share a common home, history, and ethos.

Chisenhale’s location has been occupied by factories since the mid-19th century. The building itself was constructed between 1942 and 1943. It rose from the rubble of houses destroyed during the Blitz. Morris Cohen’s furniture factory once stood here. It even produced wood veneer for RAF aeroplanes like Spitfires during the Second World War. You can still see the letters C, H, and N on the exterior facade. These stand for CHN Veneers.

After the factory closed in 1972, the building sat unoccupied for years. In 1980, artists evicted from Thames-side studios negotiated a lease with Tower Hamlets Council. They called themselves Arts Place Trust. They created studios upstairs and exhibition space downstairs. This artist-led beginning is central to Chisenhale’s identity. Chisenhale was founded by artists.

Chisenhale Gallery is a non-profit contemporary art gallery. It is known for showcasing emerging artists. Many have their first UK solo shows here. The gallery commissions new artwork. This involves a one- to two-year development process. Exhibitions are free. They also offer a Social Practice programme. This programme works with young people facing barriers to accessing art.

The #FirstThursdays initiative connects Chisenhale Gallery to other London galleries. Visitors are bussed between them on the first Thursday of each month. Notable artists like Rachel Whiteread and Wolfgang Tillmans have exhibited here. Chisenhale Gallery is a registered charity. Its program is funded through trusts, foundations, and individuals.

Chisenhale Studios provides affordable studio space for artists. The first generation of artists built the studios themselves. The studios offer a haven for East London artists. Chisenhale Dance Space supports experimental dance. It offers development programs for professionals. It also has classes for children and adults. The Dance Space was developed by the X6 collective.

Chisenhale Art Place is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the power of art. It’s a community. It’s a place where creativity thrives. From wartime factory to artistic hub, its story is etched into every brick.
