Established in 1961 Glendowie College stands proudly before you. It wasn’t always this impressive. Initially fewer than 200 students filled its single building the Adams Building. This technology block was all that existed when the school opened.

Glendowie College is a state secondary school. It serves years 9 to 13. The school’s motto E Paucis Excelsa means From few greatness. This reflects its humble beginnings and its growth into a thriving educational institution.

The college’s architecture is typical of New Zealand state secondary schools built during the 1960s. You see the characteristic two-story H-shaped classroom blocks. Recent years have brought significant upgrades. Glendowie College boasts a state-of-the-art Science Block. This was co-built with the Summerville School for Special Needs. The school also recently completed a new learning center for its students.

Glendowie College isn’t just about textbooks and tests. It offers a diverse range of subjects. Compulsory subjects include English Maths Science Social Studies PE and Health. Students get options like Art Drama Dance Music Chinese German Maori and Spanish. The school also has a rich sporting tradition. Glendowie College competes at the highest level of school rowing in New Zealand. It participates in the Maadi Cup. Its rowing teams have won numerous medals including gold medals.

Glendowie College is a community. It has four houses. These were originally named after continents Asia Europe America and Pacific. Since 2017 they’ve been renamed after Maori myths and legends. These are Raukumoko Tane Mahuta Tangaroa and Tawhirimātea. Each house has its own colour red green blue and purple.

The school celebrated its 50th jubilee in 2011. Many events commemorated this milestone. Glendowie College continues to educate and inspire its students. It is a testament to the growth and achievements of this New Zealand institution. It is a place where students from few can achieve greatness.
