How did a windmill survive in the urban jungle of London? Right before your eyes stands the Brixton Windmill, a testament to London’s agricultural past. Built in 1816, the Brixton Windmill, also known as Ashby’s Mill, once stood amidst fields, a lonely sentinel against the breeze. The Ashby family, its original owners, used its sails to grind grain, supplying flour to the local community. However, as London grew, the city’s buildings replaced the fields, slowly choking the wind that powered the Brixton Windmill. By the 1860s, the wind was too weak, forcing the Ashbys to abandon wind power. The industrious family, however, installed a steam engine in 1902, later replaced by a gas engine, allowing the Brixton Windmill to continue serving the community until 1934. Today The Brixton Windmill stands as a reminder of London’s past. This magnificent structure, no longer a working mill, offers a glimpse into a bygone era. It reminds us that even in the heart of a bustling city, echoes of the past can endure.
