Gaze upon the bronze figure atop that granite pedestal. That is the Marquis of Linlithgow Statue. But who was this man, and why does he command such a prominent position here in Melbourne?
The Marquis of Linlithgow, born John Adrian Lewis Hope, was a Scottish aristocrat. He served as Governor of Victoria from 1889 to 1895. During those years, he wasn’t just a figurehead. He travelled extensively. He looked into social conditions and helped ease hardship where he could.
Returning to England in 1895, he earned a reputation. He was known as one of Australia’s most conscientious governors. Then, in 1901, he returned. This time, he was the new federation’s first Governor-General.
However, his popularity began to wane. Some perceived his expenses as too high. After only a year, he resigned. He went back to his native Scotland. Sadly, he died there in 1905. Interestingly, he was only made Marquis of Linlithgow in 1902.
This statue wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. Many designs were considered. Lady Linlithgow requested her late husband be depicted on horseback. This was to reflect his love for horses.
William Birnie Rhind designed the statue. The moulds were crafted in Scotland. The bronze itself was cast in Naples. In June 1911, Governor-General Sir John Fuller and acting Prime Minister William Hughes unveiled the Marquis of Linlithgow Statue.
The statue itself is impressive. The overall height is 778 cm. The sculpture is 350 cm, while the pedestal stands at 428 cm. The inscription reads: THE / MARQUIS OF LINLITHGOW / P.C., K.T., C.C.M.C., G.C.V.D., / FIRST GOVENOR GENERAL / OF AUSTRALIA / 1901-02 / GOVERNOR OF VICTORIA / 1889-1895.
His time as Governor-General may have been short and controversial. Yet, he holds the distinction of being the youngest person to hold that office. He was only 40. He also had the shortest life of any Governor-General. He died at 47.
