Consider this. What if the stones of Pfarrkirche Maria Hilf could speak? They would tell a tale of faith and resilience. It’s a story rooted in the heart of Mainz-Kostheim.
Pfarrkirche Maria Hilf stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its community. Its history is interwoven with the growth of Mainz-Kostheim. The initial vision for a church arose from the foresight of Pfarrer Andreas Ricker in 1913. He secured land. He anticipated the town’s expansion.
However, fate had other plans. The area developed differently than expected. The city of Mainz constructed new homes north of the railway line. This formed the Gartenstadt Mainz-Kostheim. Pfarrer Johannes Vormwald exchanged the original site. In 1922, he acquired the plot where the church now stands.
Before a dedicated church existed, the community improvised. Early services took place in a classroom. Imagine the scene. Each week, parishioners transformed a school space into a place of worship. They moved desks. They carried in a harmonium on a stretcher. Later, they used a construction shack. From 1923 to 1927, this Bauhütte served as both church and kindergarten.
In 1927, Friedrich Fendel became the first priest of Maria Hilf. He dedicated the first official Gotteshaus. This initial church building is now the parish center. The Sisters of Divine Providence joined the community. They lived and served there until 1954.
World War II brought devastation. In 1943, an air raid severely damaged the church. Services were held in St. Kilian or in a cellar. The community repaired the damage themselves. By May 1944, they reopened their church. Further attacks struck Kostheim. St. Kilians Church burned.
The desire for a proper church grew stronger. In 1953, plans took shape. The diocese promised financial support. In 1954, during the Marian Year, construction began on the new Pfarrkirche Maria Hilf.
The cornerstone was laid in April 1954. By November, the church was consecrated by Bishop Albert Stohr. The parish had grown to 4,000 members.
Pfarrer Fendel passed away in 1955. Karl Kunkel succeeded him.
In 1958, Pfarrkirche Maria Hilf received its exterior finish. A Schutzmantel Madonna was added facing Flörsheimer Straße. It showed Mary protecting Christians. The interior was also renovated. Peter Paul Etz re-painted it. The altar and side altars got stylish images.
The choir area depicts the Holy Trinity. One side altar shows Mary as protector. The other shows Saint Joseph.
The parish house was built in 1961-62. In 1965, the church bells were consecrated. They included the e-Glocke Gloria dei. There was also the g-Glocke Maria. St. Josef and St. Anna were represented.
In 1972, Alfons Scheck created the Stations of the Cross. Renovations occurred in 1979, 1981 and from 2003.
Today, Pfarrkirche Maria Hilf continues to be a spiritual anchor. It is a place of worship. It is a symbol of hope. It is a reminder of the enduring power of community.
