Surely, a gate is just a gate? Not this one. The Japanese Gateway, or John’s Gate as it’s also known, represents a legacy of friendship between Japan and the United Kingdom.

This isn’t just any wooden structure. It marks the entrance to the Japanese Garden of Peace in Hammersmith Park. The unveiling of John’s Gate was a celebration of culture. It happened on a crisp November afternoon. The date was November 22, 2024.

This gateway is more than just an entrance. It is a symbol of Anglo-Japanese relations. The Japanese Garden of Peace is the oldest publicly owned Japanese garden in the UK. It was originally created in 1910. That was for the Japan-British Exhibition.

The unveiling ceremony included distinguished guests. Mr. Yasuyuki Okazaki from the Japanese Embassy attended. Councillor Daryl Brown was also there. He is the Deputy Mayor of Hammersmith and Fulham. Mr. Yokinobu Nakano, Vice Chair of the Nippon Club, joined too.

Taiko drummers gave a powerful performance. The Green Choir of the Nippon Club sang beautifully. Guests enjoyed traditional Japanese refreshments. They ate delicious onigiri provided by Sosaku Onigiri. Sake was served as well.

John Gordon-Smith funded the gate’s installation. He is the founder of the Friends of the Japanese Garden of Peace. The gate was formally named “John’s Gate” in his honor.

The Japanese garden has a long history. It was built in 1910 with materials from Japan. The garden was part of an exhibition celebrating the Anglo-Japanese Alliance. It has remained in its original spot despite area developments.

This gateway enhances the historic site. It blends seamlessly with the garden’s traditional design. The Japanese Gateway reinforces the garden’s role as a community landmark. It serves as a tranquil oasis in London.

The original gateway for the 1910 exhibition is now at Kew Gardens. It is a more elaborate structure called Chokushi-Mon. This new gate at Hammersmith Park adds to the garden’s charm.

Hammersmith Park has seen other improvements recently. An outdoor gym opened in July. Refurbished basketball and tennis courts were unveiled in October. These enhancements make the park a great place to visit.

So, when you pass through the Japanese Gateway, remember its history. It represents friendship, culture, and peace. It’s a little slice of Japan right here in London. Take a moment to appreciate this unique landmark.
