Crossing the Isar, the Isarsteg Unterföhring stands as a vital link. This bridge isn’t just a concrete path. It’s a gateway between Munich’s bustling city life and the serene landscapes beyond. The Isarsteg Unterföhring, operated by Uniper Kraftwerke GmbH, carries pedestrians and cyclists across the Isar River. This 112-meter-long beam bridge rests on four sturdy pillars. It’s located in the Upper Isar floodplain. The bridge sits north of Poschinger Weiher and downstream of the emergency outlet canal of the Munich sewage treatment plant Großlappen. It’s also south of the Unterföhring weir, replaced in 2009 by a rough bottom sill. The Isarsteg Unterföhring stands about 500 meters south of the Unterföhring Isar bridge of the A99 Autobahn (Munich’s ring road). It marks the boundary between Munich’s district 12, Schwabing-Freimann, and the municipality of Unterföhring in the Munich district. Access from the west is from Freisinger Landstraße, along the former Großlappen outflow left basin. East of the Isarsteg Unterföhring, you’ll find the Ismaning main pumping station, situated in the municipality of Ismaning near Münchener Straße. Besides the Unterföhring Isar bridge, the Isarsteg is the northernmost Isar crossing from the Munich city area. Nearby, a memorial stone commemorates the Isardäcker disaster of June 18, 1924, where twelve workers tragically lost their lives. The Isarsteg Unterföhring is more than just a bridge. It’s a quiet observer of history, a connector of communities, and a pathway to the beauty of the Isar River.
