Sixty years of faith. That’s what the commemorative resolution from the Texas House of Representatives declared about Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Dallas. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church stands proudly in East Dallas. Its history is interwoven with the lives of thousands.

The story of Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church begins not with the church itself but with a school. In 1947 Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic School opened its doors. It served as a vital extension for families connected to the Sacred Heart Cathedral. Young Father John T Gulczynski saw a need. He envisioned a parish to serve the growing East Dallas community.

His vision became a reality in 1952. Bishop Thomas K Gorman established the parish. He appointed Father Gulczynski as both monsignor and pastor. The striking Gothic architecture of Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church was officially dedicated in 1957. It immediately became a cornerstone for the area. It offered spiritual growth fellowship and vital community outreach.

The church’s growth was remarkable. By 2013 it served nearly 4000 families. Dedicated priests guided the congregation. The legacy continues under Father John Libone’s leadership. He’s assisted by Deacons Ken Reisor Rick Harrington and Edward Leyden. Father Vic Bartolotta joined as the parish catechetical leader and youth minister.

But Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church is more than just its impressive size or dedicated leadership. It’s a place where countless Catholics have found spiritual inspiration and guidance. The church reflects a profound connection between space and function. The architecture is processional. All attention focuses on the altar. Every aspect from the soaring ceilings to the stained-glass windows is carefully considered. It creates a space conducive to worship and reverence.

A unique feature is the rose window. Interestingly it’s positioned at the back of the church above the organ. It’s visible from the outside but hidden once inside. The choir loft sits below. This design subtly directs the worshippers attention towards the Eucharist. This is a space designed to invite contemplation and spiritual growth. The movement of people during communion is cyclical reflecting the journey from everyday life to the divine and back again.

Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church is a living testament to faith community and architectural artistry. It is a beautiful example of a worship space reflecting its purpose. It continues to serve the needs of East Dallas. This legacy is a beacon for future generations.
