A haven of faith in the heart of London Reese Adbarat Saint Mary of Debre Tsion stands tall. Its story is one of transformation a journey from Anglican roots to a vibrant Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

Originally known as St Philip’s Church it opened its doors in 1870. Designed by Sir James Knowles and built by Colls & Sons it was a testament to Victorian architecture. For nearly a century it served the Anglican community. The church even boasted a William Hill & Sons organ a treasure later moved to Reading School.

Times changed. In the late 1990s the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church began renting the building. The Church of England declared St Philip’s redundant in 2007. The name honors the Monastery of Mount Zion in Ethiopia.

The transition wasn’t without challenges. A schism within the church led to a long legal battle. This dispute involved questions of trusteeship and management.
