“Did that clock tower just chime?” a startled voice might ask. Yes, that’s the Sunshine Clock Tower, a beacon of time and industry, still standing tall amidst Sunshine’s transformation. The Sunshine Clock Tower isn’t just a timekeeper. It’s a survivor, a silent witness to the rise and fall of the Sunshine Harvester Works, once the largest manufacturing plant in Australia.

Originally part of the factory’s grand showroom, the Sunshine Clock Tower was erected in 1925. Imagine a time when this area buzzed with the clanging of machinery and the bustle of thousands of workers. The Sunshine Harvester Works, founded by H.V. McKay, revolutionized agriculture with its innovative combine harvesters. They were so successful that even the Tsar of Russia was a customer.

The showroom, a magnificent display of the company’s products, was replaced in 1955 with a lavish new building. It was inaugurated with much fanfare by the Governor of Victoria himself. Even the Prime Minister, Harold Holt, graced the event. The clock tower, however, remained, a steadfast sentinel overlooking the changing times.

The showroom eventually closed its doors in the late 1960s. The company’s focus shifted to dealerships for product sales. The once bustling space became office space and was sadly demolished in the 1980s. Yet, the Sunshine Clock Tower endured. Today, it stands as a reminder of Sunshine’s industrial past, a proud testament to the ingenuity and hard work that once shaped this suburb. It reminds us that progress doesn’t erase the past but rather builds upon it, much like Sunshine itself.
