In 1886, a sprawling 108-hectare piece of land in Glen Eden, Auckland, was designated as Waikumete Cemetery. Originally called Waikomiti, this cemetery quickly became a vital part of Auckland’s history. Waikumete Cemetery is now New Zealand’s largest cemetery. It offers a final resting place for over 70,000 people. The cemetery also houses a crematorium in its southwest corner, added in 1952. One of the oldest structures here is the Chapel of Faith in the Oaks. Built in 1886 as a mortuary chapel, it served the community until a larger chapel was built in 1952. Today, this charming chapel is available for hire and religious services. Waikumete Cemetery isn’t just a place of burial. It is a place of remembrance and reflection, marked by several prominent memorials. These include the Erebus Memorial, the Holocaust Memorial, the NZ Influenza Epidemic memorial, and the ANZAC Cenotaph. The cemetery holds a significant place in military history too. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) registers and maintains the graves of 285 Commonwealth service personnel within Waikumete Cemetery. These graves include 110 from World War I and 176 from World War II. At the entrance, the Auckland Provincial Memorial stands tall. It commemorates 56 service personnel from Auckland Province who died in service during both World Wars, but whose graves remain unknown. The CWGC also commemorates 44 World War II service personnel cremated at Waikumete Crematorium. A 1999 memorial remembers seven personnel whose ashes were once stored in the chapel building, now laid to rest on the chapel lawn. Visiting Waikumete Cemetery is more than just a walk through a graveyard. It’s a journey through history, a poignant reminder of lives lived and losses mourned, and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
