Founded in December 2000 Bethany United Church of Christ opened its doors in a cold winter. Neighbors from diverse backgrounds gathered to build a church for their community. This was in one of Seattle’s most diverse neighborhoods. Bethany quickly became a beacon of hope. It served the poor and the marginalized.
The church’s mission is simple: to do justice love kindness and walk humbly with God. This powerful message guides everything they do. From their Sunday services to their extensive community outreach programs Bethany lives out its faith.
Reverend Angela Ying the founding pastor is a remarkable figure. She’s the first Taiwanese American ordained in the US. Reverend Ying is a nationally known speaker and preacher. She received the Peace and Justice Award from the City of Seattle. Her work extends locally nationally and internationally. She champions peace and justice for people of all backgrounds.
Bethany isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub of activity. They host numerous community programs. These include a preschool a community garden and support groups for those struggling with addiction. They also provide vital aid to refugees immigrants and the homeless. The church even sponsors a tiny house village. They demonstrate tangible love and compassion for their neighbors.
The church’s sanctuary is a beautiful place. It’s also available for weddings and other events. Its top-notch acoustics make it a perfect setting for celebrations. The church offers the sanctuary along with other spaces to the community at no cost. However permission from the pastor or board is needed for non-members.
