Can you imagine a place named after plants, but not a botanical garden? This is precisely what the Villa des Plantes in Paris is, a small alleyway in the 14th arrondissement, named after the nearby Rue des Plantes. Although not as famous as its namesake, Rue des Plantes, Villa des Plantes was not always just a little alleyway. Its location was once part of the “Chemin des Plantes” a path that existed before the street even existed. It even had a “impasse” – a dead-end street – added to its name in the late 19th century, but this was removed in 1971. Villa des Plantes, a tiny alleyway, carries a history of change and growth, just like the plants it’s named after.
