How much power does it take to keep a city warm? That’s the question that comes to mind as we stand before the Heizkraftwerk Süd, a giant among giants in the world of energy production. You might mistake it for just another industrial complex from afar, but this is the beating heart that keeps Munich’s lights on and its homes warm. The Heizkraftwerk Süd has been a fixture in Munich since 1899. It has gone through many transformations over the decades, mirroring the city’s own growth and ambition. It started by primarily generating electricity. But in 1969, it embraced the power of combined heat and power, or CHP. This ingenious method allows the Heizkraftwerk Süd to produce both electricity and district heating simultaneously, maximizing efficiency and minimizing waste. The heart of this operation? Two powerful gas and steam turbine units, fueled by natural gas, working in perfect harmony. These units generate a staggering 698 megawatts of electricity. That’s enough to power a small city. But the magic doesn’t stop there. The heat generated as a byproduct, instead of being vented into the atmosphere, is captured and transformed into 814 megawatts of district heating. This heat is then distributed through a network of pipes to homes and businesses across the city. This ingenious system ensures that nothing goes to waste. It embodies the spirit of sustainability long before it became a buzzword. And as Munich looks towards a greener future, so too does the Heizkraftwerk Süd. The city aims to make its district heating 100% renewable by 2040. The Heizkraftwerk Süd will play a key role in that transition, serving as the site of Germany’s largest geothermal plant!
