How did a humble hunting ground transform into a playground for kings and emperors? Right before your eyes stands Château de Grosbois. It’s a silent sentinel to centuries of French history. Château de Grosbois began its journey as a modest estate. It was gifted to the Abbey of Saint-Victor in 1190 by King Philip II. This was no ordinary land. It was a royal hunting ground.

Imagine the sound of hooves and hunting horns as royalty roamed these grounds. Over time, Château de Grosbois changed hands many times. It witnessed the rise and fall of some of France’s most influential figures. One such figure was Charles de Valois. He was the illegitimate son of King Charles IX. He completed the château around 1640. The enclosing wall and the two wings are testaments to his vision.

Later, Château de Grosbois caught the eye of Napoleon Bonaparte himself. He acquired it and bestowed it upon Marshal Berthier, the Prince of Wagram. Berthier’s touch is still evident today. He was an avid collector and transformed the estate to reflect his passions. He expanded the library, added a “Gallery of Battles,” and furnished the château lavishly. His mark extended beyond the walls, as he transformed the grounds into the most sought-after hunting destination in the entire French Empire.

But times change. In 1962, Château de Grosbois was entrusted to the Société d’encouragement à l’élevage du cheval français. Today, it’s a renowned training center for racehorses, a testament to its enduring legacy.
