Gazing at the bustling heart of Sarıyer, can you sense the echoes of its rich past? Sarıyer isn’t just a district of Istanbul. It’s a tapestry woven with threads of ancient Greek settlements, Ottoman grandeur, and modern vibrancy. Originally known as Phinopolis, this area was built upon an existing Thracian settlement, showing the depth of history beneath our feet. Sarıyer’s history is deeply intertwined with the Bosphorus. In the 18th century, Ottoman officials and those close to the sultan began constructing yalıs, traditional waterfront mansions, along the stunning coastline. Wealthy foreign traders followed suit, transforming Sarıyer into a coveted summer destination. Even foreign embassies, located in Istanbul proper, began acquiring land here to build their own summer retreats. Imagine the vibrant social scene that must have unfolded during those summers. Despite this influx of wealth and influence, Sarıyer’s villages retained their charm as quiet fishing communities well into the 1950s. Then came the construction of the coast road. This seemingly simple act of infrastructure sparked rapid urbanization. By the 1980s, the coastline was adorned with luxurious apartments, while the hillsides saw the rise of gecekondu, informal settlements. Sarıyer today is a fascinating blend of old and new. The traditional fish market thrives, supplying a string of renowned fish restaurants that beckon locals and visitors alike. Cafés, kebab houses, and bars add to the district’s vibrant culinary scene, drawing crowds, especially on weekends. The district boundaries have shifted over time. In 1930, sections of Beyoğlu and Çatalca were combined to establish Sarıyer. Later, parts were ceded to other districts. Finally, in 2012, Maslak, Ayazağa, and Huzur were incorporated, defining Sarıyer’s current form. Within Sarıyer lie hidden gems waiting to be discovered. The Belgrade Forest offers a tranquil escape, its history steeped in Ottoman military exercises and modern-day picnics. The forest also holds the prestigious Koç University and upscale residential areas like Zekeriyaköy. Sarıyer offers something for everyone. From the historic Rumelihisarı fortress to the vibrant fish restaurants of Garipçe, Sarıyer invites you to explore its multifaceted character.
