Dedicated to Christ is Third Avenue Baptist Church. It stands as a beacon of faith in Dallas. Our tour stops here to explore its rich history. It all began in 1959 with a group of ministers and brethren. They met at New Bethel Baptist Church. They formed what was first known as Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Rev. Louis Gene John Jackson was chosen as pastor. The charter members included Claude and Maureen Crowder. Also Clotiel Jackson, Bobby J. King, and Jodie Mary Lee joined. George W. Pryor, Oran Pryor, and Rufus Pryor were among the founders. Bettie J. Smith, Mack Tennison, Aaron Williams, Euela and Henry Wooten and Weldon Wright contributed. Joe Edward Young rounded out the group.
The newly formed group worshiped at New Bethel Baptist Church for two Sundays. Then, they purchased their own building. It was located on Third Avenue. To better connect with the community the name changed. It became Third Avenue Baptist Church.
Exactly thirteen years later in 1972, they broke ground. It was for a new sanctuary and educational facility on Hatcher Street. This structure fulfilled their vision.
In 1993, Pastor L.G. Jackson led another groundbreaking. This time it was for a new sanctuary. By 1994, they moved into the new space. With God’s grace the mortgage was paid off completely. Rev. George W. Pryor delivered the entrance message.
Rev. L.G.J. Jackson passed away in 1996. His memorial marked the end of an era. He was a dedicated servant. He preached with conviction.
After his death a pulpit committee formed. They selected a new pastor. Rev. Michael D. Pryor was interviewed in November 1996. The congregation unanimously voted in his favor. His installation took place in December 1996. Pastor George W. Pryor officiated the service.
Under Pastor Michael D. Pryor’s leadership Third Avenue Baptist Church grew. Renovations created a new Fellowship Hall. Additional property was acquired. Radio and television ministries were established. The church supported missionaries at home and abroad.
Pastor Wright says “God has truly blessed me with parents”. He also says “I am honored to be called as Steward and Pastor”.
Third Avenue Baptist Church celebrated its 125th anniversary. It had existed as a mission for ten years. It officially became a church in 1894. The church continues its ministry. This is a testament to God’s faithfulness. Special events marked the anniversary. These included services. They also enjoyed a panel discussion with current and former elders. A Sunday School class taught the history of Third Avenue.
As Pastor Pryor said, “Third Avenue is a church that is small enough to need you but big enough to serve you”. The church’s mission remains clear. It aims to guide people into a relationship with Jesus Christ.
