Imagine Rio de Janeiro preparing to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This is the story of the Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro.

The city undertook a major project. It built a sports complex for the games. This complex became known as the Olympic Park. It is in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood in Rio’s West Zone. Construction began on July 6, 2012. The goal was to create a space for the Olympic events. The park spans 118 hectares. Arenas were completed in 2015. The park opened to the public on August 6, 2016.

The Olympic Park stands where the Nelson Piquet International Autodrome once was. This area had already been modified for the 2007 Pan American Games. It was then known as the City of Sports. After Rio won the bid to host the 2016 Olympics, the old race track was permanently deactivated.

Within the City of Sports you can find Carioca Arenas and the Rio Olympic Arena. Also located here are the Maria Lenk Water Park and the Velodrome. The Maria Esther Bueno Stadium is part of the Olympic Tennis Center. Two hotels housed the International Broadcast Center and Main Media Center.

Sixteen sports were played at the Olympic Park during the 2016 Olympic Games. These included basketball handball and tennis. Cycling swimming and synchronized swimming were also featured. Water polo artistic gymnastics and fencing occurred here. Rhythmic gymnastics trampoline gymnastics and judo took place too. Wrestling Greco-Roman wrestling and taekwondo rounded out the events.

Ten sports were played during the Paralympic Games. Football 5 and goalball were among them. Cycling wheelchair tennis and wheelchair rugby were included. Wheelchair basketball swimming and seated volleyball were also featured. Bocce and judo completed the list.

Arena Carioca 1 can hold 16000 people. The Rio Olympic Arena has a capacity of 12000. The Maria Esther Bueno Stadium accommodates 10000. The Maria Lenk Water Park holds 5000. Finally the Velodrome can host 5000 people. Together the spaces can host up to 48000 people.

The construction of the Carioca Arenas focused on energy efficiency. Solar potential was maximized. The park uses a building automation system. This system emphasizes efficient lighting and energy savings. Solar heating systems provide hot water in the athletes’ changing rooms.

Environmental considerations were key in the park’s design. Restoration work was completed on 70 square meters. This work aimed to restore part of the mangrove and plant restinga vegetation. This helped protect the local fauna and flora.

Hosting the Olympic Games was economically important for Rio. It boosted the state’s economy through tourism. The spaces built have become educational leisure and sports facilities for the public. Some training centers are available for high-performance athletes. These include the Olympic Training Center the Tennis Center the Water Park and the Velodrome.

After the 2016 Olympic Games leisure areas and gardens were created. The Wall of Champions displays the 2568 medals awarded during the games. The Via Olímpica is the largest public circulation area. It stretches over 1 kilometer. Its design was inspired by the Copacabana boardwalk. The Via Olímpica features two terraces and five squares. These squares now have sports equipment such as game tables a skate park and a playground. Multisport courts and a soccer field were added. One terrace now hosts an Academy for the Elderly.

The leisure area opened to the public on January 21 2017. Activities at the Olympic Training Center began in February. Rock in Rio took place here in September 2017.

The Via Olímpica is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday. Its hours are 8 am to 10 pm. It is a fun space for families seeking leisure. The Olympic Park offers areas for running skateboarding and other activities.

The Olympic Park stands as a testament to Rio’s ability to host world-class events. It provides lasting benefits for its citizens and visitors alike.
