Perhaps you’ve heard that Westminster is merely a borough. But did you know it holds city status in Greater London? It is not just any borough. Westminster is at the heart of London.

Westminster is where much of the British government resides. You will find the Houses of Parliament here. Many London landmarks call Westminster home. Think of Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and 10 Downing Street. Trafalgar Square is also within its boundaries.

But Westminster is not all government buildings and landmarks. The borough boasts major parks like Hyde Park and Regent’s Park. Away from the center, you will discover inner suburbs. St John’s Wood, Maida Vale and Belgravia are all part of Westminster.

The story of Westminster goes back centuries. The original settlement was west of London. It grew around Westminster Abbey. Edward the Confessor built a palace here in the 11th century. This ensured Westminster’s place as a seat of government. Power and wealth shifted westward from the City of London.

For centuries, Westminster and the City of London were distinct. Over time, houses filled the fields between them. Nearby villages were absorbed creating Greater London.

Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries. Yet, the former abbey church remains Westminster Abbey. The church briefly became a cathedral in 1540. This granted city status to Westminster.

The modern borough came into being in 1965. It merged the former boroughs of Westminster, Paddington and St Marylebone. Westminster’s city status transferred to this enlarged borough.

Westminster’s local authority is Westminster City Council. Its main offices are on Victoria Street.

Charing Cross is the center of London. Distances from London are measured from here.

Westminster has a rich ethnic mix. In 2021, just over half the population was White British. Sizeable Asian, Black and Mixed communities also call Westminster home.

Westminster is a place of faith. While Christianity is prevalent, Islam, Judaism and Hinduism all have a presence.

Many global corporations have headquarters in Westminster. Mayfair and St James’s are home to hedge funds and private equity firms. The West End is the Theatre District. Soho teems with media and creative companies. Oxford Street is a shopping mecca.

Westminster offers plenty of green space. Visit Green Park, Hyde Park or St James’s Park.

Getting around Westminster is easy. Many underground stations serve the city.

Westminster continues to evolve. It balances its rich history with modern life. It remains a vital part of London and the United Kingdom.
