Founded in 1910 the Congregação Cristã no Brasil has a rich history. It began with the Italian-American missionary Luigi Francescon. He first arrived in Brazil from Chicago Illinois. Francescon’s missionary journeys were remarkably successful. He found many followers among Italian immigrants and Brazilians. The Congregação Cristã no Brasil is one of the fastest-growing churches in Brazil.

In 2016 it boasted approximately 2.8 million members. By 2021 the church had over 24000 temples in Brazil alone. It also had more than 50000 temples worldwide. Its extensive missionary work continues abroad. The church’s influence is particularly strong in the São Paulo metropolitan area. There are an estimated 500000 followers. These followers attend approximately 2000 churches. A large mother church in the Brás district houses a 9800-member congregation.

Francescon played a key role in establishing the Italian-American Pentecostal church in Chicago. He left the First Italian Presbyterian Church of Chicago. His reason was his belief in water baptism by immersion. He later embraced the doctrines of anointing with oil miracles and Holy Spirit baptism. He learned these doctrines at the North Avenue Full Gospel Mission. This mission was led by William Howard Durham. Evangelists from Chicago then spread to Italian communities in the United States. They planted churches mainly in the Northeast. Many of these churches joined the Christian Church of North America. A smaller number affiliated with the Christian Congregation in the United States.

The Congregação Cristã no Brasil’s growth is notable. It spread throughout Brazil by 1950. It then expanded to all continents. The church’s distinctive features include its non-political stance. It emphasizes the absence of paid ministers. It offers significant financial aid to struggling families. The church champions universal priesthood. It rejects tithing. It also embraces spontaneity in its services. The Congregação Cristã no Brasil’s unique practices and enduring appeal have made it a significant religious force in Brazil and beyond. The church continues its growth through individual faith and missionary efforts. Its enduring legacy is a testament to the power of faith and community. This church remains a significant part of Brazilian culture and religious landscape. The Congregação Cristã no Brasil continues to thrive and spread its message of faith.
