Ever wonder about a village that has seen centuries pass? That village is Zwochau. Today we’ll explore this Saxon gem. Zwochau sits in North Saxony. It is part of the municipality Wiedemar since 2013. Before that, it stood alone.

Zwochau’s story began long ago. The first record of it is from 1158. Imagine life nearly 900 years ago. Flemsdorf and Schladitz joined Zwochau in 1936. This made the village larger and more diverse.

Zwochau has been under different rulers. It was part of the Prussian Province of Saxony. Later, it belonged to Halle-Merseburg. After World War II, it was in Saxony-Anhalt. Under East Germany, it was part of Bezirk Leipzig. Since 1990, it is back in Saxony.

The village lies near several cities. Halle is about 30 km to the west. Leipzig is about 20 km to the southeast. Delitzsch is a mere 10 km to the northeast. Autobahn no. 9 is close. You can reach it via the Wiedemar entrance.

Zwochau bears marks of its industrial past. It was once a center for brown coal mining. Today, new lakes are forming in the old open pits. These are the Werbeliner See, Grabschützer See and Zwochauer See. They are part of the “Saxon Sealand”. Leipzig/Halle Airport is just south of Zwochau.

What can you see in Zwochau? Don’t miss the “Saxon Sealand”. It’s a testament to nature’s resilience. Visit the Zwochau Church. Also see the Zwochau Post Windmill. It is called Neue Bockwindmühle.

Zwochau may be small. Yet, it holds a piece of Saxon history. Its location makes it a convenient stop. It is near Leipzig and Halle. The village has seen much change over time. From ancient charters to modern lakes, Zwochau is a place of transformation. Its story continues to unfold.
