Gazing at the Black Rock Uniting Church, imagine those early Methodist preachers, cycling along sandy tracks, often lost in the thick ti-tree surrounding this very spot. Black Rock Uniting Church wasn’t always the unified structure we see today. Its story is woven from three distinct threads: Congregational, Methodist, and Presbyterian. The Methodists arrived in 1914, establishing a church at the corner of Balcombe Road and Central Avenue. They held their first service here on December 6th, 1914. Imagine their dedication. Travel on Sundays wasn’t considered proper, forcing preachers on long walks or bike rides to reach the church. The church itself was a modest wooden structure, rented from the builders, brothers Will and Jack Edsall. It held about 100 people, a testament to the growing community’s faith. In 1918, this land and building became their own. Black Rock Uniting Church’s Methodist beginnings were humble, yet strong. Fast forward to the 1960s at Black Rock Uniting Church. The Methodists commissioned artist Alan Sumner, known for his work at the National Gallery School, to design stunning stained glass windows. The existing sketches at the State Library of Victoria show his unique vision for this church. This artistic touch adds another layer to the rich tapestry of Black Rock Uniting Church. In 1977, these three congregations—Congregationalist, Methodist, and Presbyterian—united to form the Black Rock Uniting Church, initially using the Methodist building for worship. The sale of the Congregational and Presbyterian properties helped fund improvements, including a new manse and modern facilities. This marked a significant chapter in the Black Rock Uniting Church’s history, demonstrating unity and progress. The current Black Rock Uniting Church stands as a symbol of this combined heritage, a beacon of faith built upon the dedication and dreams of those who came before.
