Four to five major exhibitions are mounted each year in the Jewett Gallery. The gallery is open to the public during regular library hours. All exhibitions and programs are free.

But who were Mr. and Mrs. George F. Jewett, Jr.? George Frederick “Fritz” Jewett, Jr. was a prominent figure. He had a long career in the forest products industry. He retired from Potlatch Corporation as vice chairman of the board in 1999.

Beyond his business success, Jewett was a dedicated philanthropist. He served on the board of San Francisco’s California Pacific Medical Center for 41 years. He also played a key role in establishing the city’s Asian Art Museum.

Fritz and his wife Lucy were passionate about art and culture. They believed in its power to elevate communities. One of their notable achievements was securing the Avery Brundage Collection for San Francisco. Fritz chaired the city’s Asian Art Commission. The Jewetts hosted Mr. Brundage at their home.
