Imagine the roar. The earth trembling beneath the colossal weight of a 200-ton weapon. That’s the power Battery Davis once held. Right here on these very dunes overlooking the Pacific Ocean in San Francisco’s Fort Funston. Battery Davis wasn’t just any military installation. It was a vital part of San Francisco’s harbor defenses during World War II. This imposing structure housed two 16-inch guns. Each gun was 68 feet long and capable of firing a 2100-pound armor-piercing round over 25 miles out to sea.

These weren’t ordinary cannons. They were giants. Built between 1937 and 1940 these weapons were originally intended for the USS Saratoga a battlecruiser whose construction was halted by the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922. The guns were repurposed for coastal defense finding their home here in Battery Davis. The construction was a massive undertaking involving the excavation of 113598 cubic yards of sand and the placement of tons of concrete and steel. The entire project cost a staggering $860440.24.

The ingenuity of Battery Davis goes beyond its size and firepower. Its design was revolutionary. The battery was casemated meaning the guns were housed in reinforced concrete structures offering protection from aerial bombardment. This innovative approach made Battery Davis a prototype for future heavy-caliber seacoast batteries across the United States. A special “burster course” a two-foot-thick concrete shield between layers of earth and sand was designed to detonate incoming shells before they reached the main structure.

During WWII soldiers stood 24 hours a day in concrete lookouts scanning the skies and waters for enemy ships and aircraft. They used advanced listening devices to detect the slightest reverberation in the water or air. Battery Davis served as a powerful deterrent. Its presence alone helped safeguard San Francisco Bay from potential attacks.

Sadly the guns were eventually deemed obsolete victims of advancing air power and nuclear weapons. In 1948 they were cut up for scrap in an operation called “Operation Blowtorch.” Today only the concrete remains a testament to a bygone era. But as you stand here you can almost feel the echoes of the past the weight of history in these sand dunes. This is Battery Davis a silent giant a crucial piece of San Francisco’s rich and often overlooked military heritage.
